This is what flat actually takes.
Those yellow and red clips are a leveling system. Every tile gets pulled to the same height as the one beside it while it sets, then the clips snap off. It's the difference between a floor that looks right and one with an edge you catch a toe on.

Mosaic bands set level with the field tile, niches cut square, and floors carried out to the doorway rather than stopped short of it.
